Reviews For Writers: Noisli

I don’t like to write in silence. And I’m not by a fireplace as often as I wish.

Solution: Noisli.

Noisli is a website. It has an iOs app, an Android app, and a chrome extension.

I’ve used the classic web-app version of Noisli for about five years now. It’s elegant and simple. You single-click the sounds you want from their library of sounds You can modulate the volume levels. And mix them together at will.

Lapping water. Rustling leaves. Train chugging over tracks. White noise.

Or you choose a pre-combined set of sounds arranged into playlists like ‘Productivity’, ‘Relax’, or ‘Sleep’.’

Noisli’s greatness is its simplicity. In a matter of seconds, you can set the mood and get working.

Five years in, I still can’t find a thing to complain about. I’m glad they don’t tinker with it obsessively. It remains simple, elegant, and free.

Noisli once led me to one of these post-tech irony moments — in a coffeeshop, headphones in, listening to simulated coffeeshop sounds. Surreal. But I’m not a sound purist. Another example of how the simulated is often more concentrated than the thing itself.

I have it bookmarked and whenever it’s time, I let the wind, thunder, and fireplace-crackle lead me into a pleasant working trance.
