Stuck and looking for something to get your pen moving? Here are three simple writing prompts you can use as warmups, jumping-off points, or general beginnings for all genres of writing.
In Your Fridge
List everything you know is in your fridge. Rank each item best to worst, and then start writing reasons why you ranked things the way you did. See if any of those food items spark a sensory memory that might be worth writing into.
Pyramid Poem
Write a poem where each line is longer than the previous line. You might also try this backward: start with the longest line and write progressively shorter lines. You can also combine both these strategies and use one prompt for the first stanza, the other for the second.
Rhyme Scheme
Choose three simple words. (The simpler the better. Think: sit, dress, set, mat, bag, etc.) Try to think of as many words as you can that rhyme with them. Now incorporate all the words you’ve brainstormed into a poem or story.
Ancestor
Imagine an ancestor. Name them. Write a letter in their voice to you right now.
